8  Fun Outdoor Activities to Make the Most of Your Year

Getting outside is important for both your physical health and mental health!

However, since the era of the pandemic, many of us struggle to find reasons to enjoy some fresh air. Whether it’s spring, summer, winter, or fall, there are outdoor activities to be enjoyed.

Whatever season you’re in, here are some fun activities to help you get outside and make the most of your year.

    Spring

    Go Hiking

As the trails begin to clear and dry, the spring is a great time to go hiking. Consider exploring local trails or planning a trip to visit some natural parks and check out the blooming flowers and trees coming back to life. You can also train your dog to run and hike with you to make it a form of regular exercise.

    Enjoy a picnic

Warm weather is the perfect time to have a picnic. Picnics should be enjoyed with loved ones, so pick a day and get to planning. You can find picnic baskets online, from modern coolers to vintage-looking traditional baskets. Pack plenty of snacks and food, as well as drinks and maybe even a bottle of wine.

    Bird watching

Spring is also a time when birds begin to migrate. While bird-watching may be an activity thought to be reserved for seniors, you’d be surprised at how entertaining and beautiful this activity can be. Grab some binoculars and check out recommendations for local bird watching. Everyone should do this at least once in their life.

    Summer

    Learn how to roller-skate

Rollerskating is making a comeback, and the summer is the perfect time to learn how to wheel around. You can find an array of rollerskate or rollerblade options online, but if you’ve never put on a pair of skates, research to find the best option for beginners. There are also many online resources, including videos and articles on techniques and tips for beginners. You should also pick up a set of knee and elbow pads and a helmet to keep you safe as you learn.

    Have a water gunfight

If you’ve never participated in a water gunfight, you’re missing out on a good time. While no one wants to get wet outside in the winter, a summertime water gunfight is the perfect way to cool down and have a lot of fun while doing it. Pick up some water guns from the store, find a date to battle, and invite your friends, family, and even the whole neighborhood for a local showdown.

Watch a movie under the stars

Outdoor movie nights are great for couples, friends, or the whole family. You can find decent and cheap projectors on Amazon, and make sure to pick up a white sheet while you’re at it. Hang some clothesline and attach your sheet to it, position some chairs, blankets, and pillows, hang some outdoor lighting, and connect a Bluetooth speaker, and you’ve got your outdoor movie theater. You can also invest in a popcorn machine and purchase snacks for a complete movie theater experience. You can also look at your local community events as some may host summer movie nights with local artisans, food, restrooms, and drinks available. All that’s left to do is pick a movie, and you’ve got the perfect summer night activity.

    Make ice cream

Who doesn’t love ice cream on a warm summer day? Instead of going out and buying a pint of ice cream from the grocery store, consider making it at home instead. There are many different techniques for making ice cream, and even without an ice cream machine, it’s easy to make. The best part is that you can experiment with as many flavors and mix-ins as your heart desires. And if you’ve got children in your household, making ice cream is the perfect activity for them to participate in. If you haven’t made homemade ice cream before, put it on your list of to-dos for this summer.

    Fall

    Go apple picking

The great thing about apples is that almost anywhere, you can find an apple orchard offering self-picking. This is a great activity for everyone, from children to adults, to enjoy. Look online for a local orchard near you and get to picking.

    Visit a pumpkin patch

Another great activity you have to do at least once in your life is visiting a pumpkin patch. However, not just any pumpkin patch will do; it needs to be a good one. Find a local pumpkin patch with great reviews and more activities than just pumpkin picking. Some pumpkin patches offer rides, corn mazes, games, and other activities to make it a day activity.

Ride on a hot air balloon

If you have a fear of heights, this activity might not be for you. But the fall is a great time of year for a hot-air balloon ride. Experience all of the beauty that fall has to offer with thousands of feet in the air. This is also a great activity to spark some romance for couples. Just make sure to wear warm, well-fitting clothes to keep you warm, as the air gets pretty windy up there.

    Go to a winery

Whether you’re a seasoned connoisseur of wine or just enjoy a drink, going to a winery is lots of fun for adults. Plus, there are many ways to enjoy the experience. Look online and consider taking a wine tour, or just visit a local winery and enjoy the fall flavors with tastings.

    Winter

    Skiing or Snowboarding

Many people go their whole lives without seeing snow, no less participating in some snow sports. However, everyone should try a winter sport at least once in their lives. Hit the slopes for some winter sports, and if you’ve never tried either, consider hooking yourself up with an instructor to get started on the right foot.

    Go ice skating

Ice skating is another winter wonderland staple. Find an ice skating rink in your area if you live in a warmer region, or find a frozen pond if your zone hits below freezing. Ice skating is full of fun and laughter, especially when you get to see your friends fall right on their butts.

    Ride a sled

While winter can cause problems like driving in the snow, it also offers plenty of opportunities for fun, including sledding. Find a large hill of snow and bring your sled. You can either DIY one with things you’re likely to find sitting around your home, like a boogie board or large box, or look online for some cheap options. Then get to sledding!

    Outdoor fun for every season

Make this year full of fun outdoor activities and create memories you’ll never forget. From bird-watching to water-gun fights, apple picking, and more, there are plenty of ways to get outside and enjoy the seasons. Just remember to consider your local climate and weather conditions when planning outdoor activities.
