Keyword Research Methodology – A Quick Guide

Anyone involved in SEO knows that keywords are the basis of all the methods involved and keyword research is so very important in the process.

If you can’t predict which keywords consumers will be using on the internet, you might as well forget having a successful online presence.  However, knowing that keyword research is necessary, and knowing how to do that research, are two entirely different things.

This overview should clarify some of the reasons for keyword research, and how to use it successfully with your own business.

A Quick Explanation of Keyword Research

You’d be surprised at how many people do not know how to explain what keyword research actually is.  One of the most important aspects of SEO, keyword research refers to researching and finding out the actual search terms that people type in when using search engines to find out information on the internet.  Using the best keywords can help the business achieve better rankings with those search engines.  Finding out what your target audience is searching for online can lead to both short-term and long-term organic search traffic to your website.

Keywords Can Tell You a Lot about Internet Users

Keyword research can reveal a lot about internet users and potential customers.  It can reveal what your audience’s problems are (so you can solve them!), what language they’re using (phrasing is important), and which topics are more or less important to people.  Topics and keywords trend and wane over time, so this knowledge is incredibly helpful to have.

The Value of a Particular Keyword

This, quite simply, is the importance of a particular keyword to your business and website.  The terminology associated with keyword value includes volume, keyword ranking or competitiveness difficulty, and suggested bid or cost-per-click.  The volume is the amount of monthly searches that are conducted for a particular keyword.

Competitiveness difficulty refers to how likely you can use a particular keyword to achieve better search rankings.  Some keywords are used by thousands of companies, making it difficult for companies using that keyword to achieve first-page rankings.  Other keywords are used less often, meaning that there’s more room to compete for top rankings with those keywords.  The cost-per-click, or suggested bid, is the monetary value of a keyword and how much advertisers are willing to spend to have an ad that uses that keyword.

Getting Started with Keyword Research

Keyword research can seem overwhelming to many website owners, but there are numerous ways to get started on it.  Create a starting list of words and phrases, just working off of what your business is about.  Good keywords will be related to the theme of your website, and to come up with those, think about the questions your readers might be asking.  Perhaps they’re wondering how to do something, or they’re looking for a specific item.  Think of root keywords, such as that thing that you do or the service or product your business provides.  Take advantage of Google’s autocomplete feature for finding phrases instead of just single keywords.

Refining Your List of Keywords

Once you’ve compiled a good list of possible keywords, you need to fine-tune that list.  Sometimes, that means eliminating keywords that have too much competition, since that additional competition makes getting good results in search rankings very difficult.  Sometimes, you can expand on your list by using keyword research tools and tools to generate long tail keywords.

Another way to expand on your list is by including synonyms of your keywords already listed, along with focusing on the wording of search queries people might use in search engines.  Question-based searches are the most common searches on the internet, so you have to think like the person searching in order to come up with the best keywords and phrases. It’s best if you can also align keywords with your business goals, such as launching a new product line.  Another way to expand your keyword list is by using a SEO tool that reveals your competitors’ keywords.  From there, you can optimize your website and content for keywords.

It’s important to note that keyword research is not a one-time thing.

It has to be an ongoing and evolving task in the process of web development , because the internet and consumers are forever changing preferences. Any good SEO consultant knows that keyword research is a vital part of any SEO strategy.  Businesses are relying on their internet presence now more than ever before, and it’s important to understand how SEO ties in with that.  It’s probably the single most important aspect of SEO, and website owners will do well to take the time to research those keywords properly.
