What Internet Speed Do You Really Need?

Can you imagine life without the Internet or with a slow internet speed? You can read about it here on geekersmagazine.com.

Even if you are an adult, who didn’t have access to the Internet as a child, right now it’s extremely difficult to imagine a different world where we’re not all connected. The online life is completely intertwined with the real life and nowadays there are very few things we do without being connected. Just think about it: we meet friends and soul mates online, we use social networks every hour of every day, and we even use connected apps to measure our fitness goals.

In the US, 86.75% of the population was already connected in 2014 (source internetlivestats.com). Since then, the number has definitely gone up and soon, we may even reach 100% coverage. The only thing that varies from region to region is our internet speed and this is the variable that many providers push when they want to convince you to up your plan. It’s absolutely normal to be attracted towards faster connectivity, but do you really need it? Remember, this also means that you will have to pay more money each month.

Does a faster connection feel like speed?

Contrary to what you might think, a faster connection doesn’t actually feel. This happens because there are more factors involved when you communicate with servers all over the world (all the sites you access are hosted on servers somewhere). The first factor that limits your connection is the remote server you are trying to access.

Still, when there are no limitations, you will experience faster downloads and shorter loading time on web pages.

Do I need a faster connection for online streaming services?

This depends on you mostly. Usually, even the slowest connection in plans available across the US will support online streaming. The main difference is that with a slow connection you will only be able to see videos in low quality and many will spend a lot of time buffering.

If this is your current situation and you don’t like waiting, then it’s definitely the time for an upgrade. You might look into bigger providers that also support fiber-link (if this is available in your area) as they can offer a pretty good deal for faster connectivity. If you also want better TV with your Internet plan, then satellite TV is the best option for you (especially in rural areas). For example, even though Directv isn’t an Internet company, they have contracts with the biggest providers in the country so you can bundle TV and Internet in one single plan.

Does the internet speed affect online gaming?

It may seem that your online gaming performance can be influenced by your Internet speed and this might be true, with slow connections.

However, a medium internet speed connection should allow you to play any online game you want. After a certain level of internet speed, it doesn’t matter how much bandwidth you have.

In advanced online games, the factor that matters the most is your network responsiveness. This is the time it takes for a request to be sent to the server and then sent back to you with an answer. The shorter this time, the more responsive your network is.

As you can see, you don’t need lightning fast Internet to do most of the activities we do every day. Even the top online games, which are pretty advanced, don’t require too much bandwidth so, if you’re not trying to beat some kind of record, a medium plan will be enough.
