Best Android GPS Apps

There are hundreds of GPS applications availablre in the market for Android phone but here we compiled some best GPS apps for your Android Phones.

Google Maps Navigation

7 Best Android GPS Apps
Google Maps with navigation is available for Android 1.6 and higher. This suite has proven itself and is currently the most popular GPS app for Android 1.6 users and above. It includes many features that no other GPS apps are able to provide, such as Street View and Satellite views.

Loopt- Android GPS Apps

Glympse – Android GPS Apps

Glympse uses the T-Mobile G1’s GPS to find your location, then lets you send a link with that location to a friend, family member, business associate and so on.
7 Best Android GPS Apps
When the intended recipient receives the link, they can click on it to open a dynamic map that displays your location in real-time. Rather than being yet another social network that you have to fill out a profile for, invite friends, and all the other usual hassles, Glympse requires no registration or login. And friends are temporary. You can choose to allow your location to be seen for a minimum of 15 minutes and a maximum of 4 hours which drastically simplifies the user privacy process.

Locale – Android GPS Apps

7 Best Android GPS Apps
This is the clever kind of app that I love. It uses your location to adjust settings on the phone. It might seem a little confusing at first, but you can program your phone to perform certain functions when you get to predefined locations. For example – You can set the phone to remind you to charge your battery when you walk through your front door. You can set the phone to go switch to silent mode as soon as you arrive at the cinema. The list is endless and you can configure it to do exactly what you want. Shame this is only available for Android.

Places Directory- Android GPS Apps

7 Best Android GPS Apps
As the name implies, Places Directory allows you to browse nearby places in categories like Restaurants, Movie Theaters, Hotels and Banks. You’ll see distance and directions to the destination, and if you tap on the listing, we’ll show ratings and photos. You can also call the business or view its location on Google Maps.

CoPilot- Android GPS Apps

7 Best Android GPS Apps
If you do a lot of traveling and often travel off your planned routes CoPilot is for you. CoPilot’s software works on maps that are downloaded to the SD card on the phone. The larger storage of a SD card allows you to fit the maps for all of North America on the phone. CoPilot also has a nice interface that is easy to use while driving. If you are used to a conventional GPS system like a Garmin, CoPilot is the closest you will come in terms on interface. I also prefer the voice alerts much better on CoPilot than on Google Maps. Copilot does everything you need in a GPS app, even thought it may not include some of the fancier features like Street View.

Wisepilot- Android GPS Apps

7 Best Android GPS Apps
WisePilot is another GPS app for Android. Honestly I feel this app doesn’t set itself apart from any of the other GPS apps enough to justify a $69.95 per year price tag. Yes, it does get you to point to point. It does have points of interest and voice alerts, but so do the free apps along with CoPilot. The one thing that it does do, is it lets you manage all your routes online. This can be a very nice feature if you are planning a trip. You can map out an entire trip from start to finish, including places to eat and the gas stations you will have to stop at, all on their website.

I am partial to the Garmin maps and hope that they will bring out a version Similar to Garmin XT for Android.  This works nicely on Symbian, however, Android is where the action is today.

“my tracks” can monitor your average speed, max speed, etc.

All these apps use GPRS which eats minutes.  How about featuring some GPRS apps that have no GPRS use  — that is no need for a data connection.

    Nilimesh,

At the top of the page you have a picture of a GPS application that seems to make your phone work like a conventional GPS, giving your current position, bearing, speed, etc. (And, I think with a satelite view.) That is exactly what I have been looking for. Do you know the name of that application?

  • Bo Xiong

“Im Here Plus” is a combination of “I’m here”, “Where are you?” and SMS popup.
“Im Here Plus” allows you to use SMS text messaging to check the status and GPS location of any person on your contact list, as long as they have “Im Here Plus” installed as well. You may also choose to send others your current location via SMS, whether with just your GPS address or with an edited personalized location.
Anyone can also text you “where r u?” from any device and receive an automatic response with your availability (which you may manually select: busy or free), as well as your current GPS location.

    Unique feature “Smart GPS”:
We all know GPS doesn’t work well when you’re inside of buildings, upon this point, Phone will use tower signal to only get approximate address which may be too far off from your current address. “Smart GPS” will solve this issue.
How Smart GPS works? It learns the position’s data from your activities in the past, combines with time and signals data, try to provide the best address.

The GPS application pictured at the top of this page is called “GPS Status”.

To track your actual route using your Android phone I found Open GPS Tracker to be the best: https://market.android.com/details?id=nl.sogeti.android.gpstracker.

They also have direct integration with http://www.gobreadcrumbs.com so you can organize, edit and share your tracks in a web application.

  • Nick

Ovi maps with turn by turn gps navigation, free for life with Nokia. I’m waiting for Android phones to have the same function before I consider changing my Nokia. That is if Nokia remains in business.

  • Samuel

who is family? brits? aus? anyways, I am lost without gps and these apps like great. I need to focus on designing and making a few apps but this is boosting me to save up to finally get the droid hardware!

  • Toad

@Rich Yes, the Streets and Trips GPS receivers work with all android apps we have tried.
We have the X-Blox S&T recvr and the earlier (can’t remember the model) S&T receiver.
Have NOT been able to use any of the DeLorme Bluetooth recvrs and limited success with DeLorme USB attached recvrs.
